My Favorite Photography Locations
One of the questions I get asked most often when clients book a session is, “Where should we take our photos?” The location you choose can truly set the tone for your images, and fortunately our area of North Carolina has so many beautiful spots that photograph incredibly well.
Whether you’re looking for blooming gardens, scenic lakes, charming small-town streets, or quiet natural settings, there are plenty of amazing locations for family, lifestyle, engagement, and portrait photography throughout Raleigh and Johnston County.
Here are some of my favorite places to photograph sessions.
WRAL Azalea Gardens – Raleigh, NC
The WRAL Azalea Gardens in Raleigh is easily one of the most beautiful spots in the area, especially during the spring bloom. The vibrant azaleas, winding garden paths, and charming bridges create a romantic and colorful backdrop that works beautifully for portraits.
This location is especially popular for spring family sessions, maternity photos, and couples sessions when the flowers are in full bloom. The soft colors and lush greenery create a dreamy setting that makes photos feel bright and timeless.
Bass Lake Park – Holly Springs, NC
Bass Lake Park in Holly Springs is such a peaceful location for photography sessions. The boardwalk along the water, tall trees, and quiet nature trails create a calm and natural setting.
This spot is wonderful for family sessions, engagement photos, and lifestyle portraits. The lake reflections and warm sunset light make it especially beautiful in the evening.
Old Waynesborough Park – Goldsboro, NC
Old Waynesborough Park in Goldsboro is a hidden gem that offers a rustic and historic feel for photography sessions. With historic buildings, open green space, and charming pathways, this location has so much character.
It’s a great option for engagement sessions, family photos, and portraits for anyone who loves a slightly vintage or countryside atmosphere.
Barbour’s Grove Park – Four Oaks, NC
Barbour’s Grove Park in Four Oaks is one of my favorite quiet spots for sessions in Johnston County. With open fields, trees, and beautiful evening light, it creates a peaceful and natural setting for photos.
This park is perfect for family sessions and lifestyle photography, especially during golden hour when the sunlight creates a soft, warm glow.
Double C Ranch – Coats, NC
If you’re looking for a rustic, countryside location with a ton of variety, Double C Ranch is an absolute dream for photography sessions. Nestled in the quiet town of Coats, this venue offers a laid-back, charming atmosphere that makes every session feel relaxed and natural.
The property features wide open fields that create the perfect backdrop for golden hour sessions. There’s also a peaceful, scenic feel throughout the property that makes it ideal for families, couples, and even branding sessions.
One of the standout features is the beautiful rustic barn. Inside, the barn is thoughtfully decorated with farmhouse tables, warm lighting, and unique details like wagon wheel chandeliers, creating a cozy and visually stunning indoor option for photos. The interior alone offers so many creative opportunities, especially for sessions that need a mix of indoor and outdoor variety.
If you’re wanting a location that feels both elevated and relaxed with plenty of space, beautiful scenery, and a touch of rustic elegance Double C Ranch is definitely one to consider.
Benson Singing Grove – Benson, NC
The Benson Singing Grove is a charming little park located in the heart of downtown Benson. What makes this location so unique is the beautiful canopy of large trees that creates a naturally shaded and peaceful atmosphere.
This park has a small amphitheater, brick walkways, and plenty of greenery, making it a great backdrop for family sessions, couples, and children’s portraits. The filtered light through the trees gives photos a soft and natural look that works beautifully for lifestyle photography.
Another reason I love this location is its quiet, small-town feel. It’s usually less crowded than larger parks, which makes sessions feel relaxed and comfortable, especially for families with young kids.
Because it’s located right in downtown Benson, we can also easily incorporate nearby streets and buildings into the session to add a little variety to your photos.
Smithfield Recreation & Aquatics Center – Smithfield, NC
Another hidden gem for photography sessions is the Smithfield Recreation & Aquatics Center. While many people know it for its sports facilities and aquatic center, it also features a beautiful walking trail that winds through the woods, creating a peaceful and natural backdrop for photos.
The long wooded trail is perfect for clients who love a more relaxed, nature-inspired setting. Tall trees line the path and create gorgeous filtered light, especially during golden hour. The trail also provides plenty of quiet spots away from crowds, making it ideal for family sessions, maternity photos, and even couples looking for a cozy, outdoorsy feel.
